Wilfred

The show Wilfred is about a man named Ryan that in the first episode attempts to commit suicide. To do so, he swallowed a bunch of pills and awaited his demise. Shortly after taking the pills, his neighbor knocks on the door and asks him to watch her dog while she runs an errand. For unknown reasons Ryan sees the dog as a man in a dog suit. Wilfred, the dog, speaks English to Ryan while everyone else just sees a regular dog. This raises a lot of questions, like is Ryan hallucinating from the pills? Is he already dead? As he takes care of Wilfred he talks to his sister and finds out that she gave him sugar pills because she was afraid he would abuse them. This means he isn’t dead or hallucinating from the pills, so for the rest of the series Ryan tries to figure out why Wilfred looks and acts like a man. Along this quest to figure out Wilfred origins, he has a theory that Wilfred is some sort of god because he often knows things that Ryan doesn’t, which means he can’t only be a creation of Ryan’s mind. Eventually Ryan finds a cult that warships a being that looks just like Wilfred and despite gaining all sorts of information on what Wilfred might be, he is left with even more questions after discovering the cult. The evolution of Ryan’s belief while searching for answers mimics the journey that anyone could go on when trying to get in touch to the spiritual world. In the end, Ryan gives up on his search for solid evidence and answers and just embraces his love for Wilfred regardless of what he really is.
