Shamanism and Healing, Sarita Madrid
I liked learning about shamanism when we watched the Jacket because it reminds me of the healing that God can give you. God can give you healing if you ask but healing is more of a spiritual journey for me because it involves a different process of asking for healing. I believe that all emotions are good (whether they make you "feel" bad or not) because emotions that make you "feel" bad indicate that something is wrong and needs attention. Most of the time when we get upset by things we are triggered by something. With that, most of the time people do not really do anything "wrong" for us to get upset by; we just overreact to it.
When praying for healing, I dwell on the emotion I felt whenever I was upset and I let it take me back to a memory. This is the not fun part of healing because I do not want to feel upset and remember a time I also felt this way. I could relate to Jack in this way because he did not want to go back into the drawer. Eventually, you realize sometimes what is best for you is not what you want to do but in the end it is what you need to do. After going to the memory, it is your job to search for WHY you were upset. What lie did you believe in that instance? Did you believe you were not good enough? Did you believe you were powerless? Like shamanism, you are making this spiritual journey in order to discover the root of the problem, or the root of the way you feel. Once you figure that out, you can ask God what he thinks. What is his truth? What does he want you to know? I think that this is a way of healing that gives you more of a spiritual journey than just asking God. I also think it is really effective because it requires self-searching and going into the past as opposed to just asking for healing FOR the past. God wants to replace the lies you believe but I think it is important to know first what the lies you believe are and where they come from. This in itself is a comforting process because you are able to realize in the moment of being triggered that a) the person did not do anything wrong b) you are feeling this way because of x event and c) you can get healing so this does not happen. In the end, receiving healing is such a freeing process because the truth will set you free. It enables you to be a better person and it will help you act better towards people or in the instances you were triggered by before.
I thought that it was interesting to study something similar to this process in psychology class this year. We learned about a social cognitive treatment that involved this exact process of finding out what the beliefs were to one's emotions and then changing them. I thought this was interesting because I was wondering how or if it actually worked. In those instances, people or themselves are telling them the truth to replace the lies but how would that be effective? If people telling themselves the truth and believing it on the spot were effective it would work without a therapist because a person would do it themselves. Just like getting healing with God, it is one thing to tell myself "God loves me" but it is another to be told by God that he loves me. Solely telling yourself the truth does not seem to work which is why I was curious as to how the psychological treatment is.
