Ryan Lynch - The Truman Show
The Truman Show is 90's comedy starring none other than Jim Carrey. The narrative centers around a man whose entire life is a reality TV show. However, he is unaware of this and just thinks he is living a normal life and making his own decisions, even though everything he does is being broadcast live to the world. He slowly begins to realize this fact, and tries to escape his community, while the showrunners try their hardest to keep him under their control. Truman's illusion of free will can be seen as a microcosm of our own lives as we are surrounded by influential marketing and subconscious messaging. This is another instance in Hollywood of humans attempting to play the role of God. This time with humans trying to control other humans for their own personal gain, and not from the aspect of creation, but one of control and dominance. In this instance the humans acting as God fall short in their aspirations, and are unable to fully complete their goal. The show creator is named Christof, which is a play on christ and of, as in Christ of Truman. He is the that plans Truman's destiny just as many people believe that God plans our destiny's for us. Christof has a great ego, and is quick to defend his decisions, he is even shown going after ex-cast members that question his ethics. His egotistical defense of actions actually has the opposite effect that he intended as he comes off as weak and self-conscious.
