La La Land (film) - The Journey and Choices

La La Land is a musical film that resonates with the hearts of those on the journey towards achieving one's dreams. Visually the film is stunning in the way it uses a very vibrant color palette to reflect the story line. The primary color detailing worn by the different characters reflected not only themselves but carried the romantic voice of the film. The music in the film also carries the story and its characters experiences.

This film grapples with the ideas of what could have beens and what is. The question of whether or not love or aspirations should be valued highly over the other, is continually strewn throughout the film. This narrative follows the lives of Mia and Sebastian. Mia is an aspiring actress while Sebastian dreams of owning his own jazz club. Both live in LA where many try to pursue big dreams in the acting and music industry of Hollywood. As their paths cross their journeys become intertwined and more complex as they face different opportunities to pursue either each other or their big city dreams.

As the relationship between Mia and Sebastian continue the initial romantic Hollywood glamor starts to fade as they begin to see each other's raw selves. They start to see that they cannot treat each other as concepts but must choose to treat each other as people which is a lot messier and complicated. This was specifically jarring to see when Sebastian misses Mia's theater production where only a few show up to see her perform. When he comes it's too late and you can feel the weight of what Mia says to Sebastian as she expresses her disappointment and embarrassment for putting herself out on the stage. After this their relationship starts to dwindle and they soon discover that they are more in love with their dreams than they actually are with each other. Even though they could have had the opportunity to make their love work they choose to go down the career path.

At the end of the film the dreamy Hollywood picturesque ideal of what could have been between Mia and Sebastian is depicted in a series of montages. The visuals look attractive and ideal but it misses the imperfect rawness of human relationships. The consequence of their choices is not seen in this montage but rather it idealizes a concept of what could have been rather than what is reality. Thus showing that the journey must involve the consequence of our choices even if it's not the most ideal.
