Kai Lynch - Decalogue
These films were really hard to follow because before this class I had never really watched a movie with subtitles before. I did not hate it but I did not love it. I thought it was so interesting that this series of films was made about the ten commandments to represent them.
Though this movie series was made in the late 1980's, the principles stand true to this time. The first commandment of the Ten Commandments "Thou shall have no other Gods before me" was represented by a man and his love of computers and technology. All through out the film, the mans son wanted to play with the computer but his dad would never let him. This man loved his computer and worshipped it as one would worship a god. When the little boy wanted to have skates for his birthday he asked about his mom and where she was and if she was ever coming back. I don't really remember the exact conversation or what was said, but I think the dad said something to bypass the question about his mom, and handed him skates. Then, the little boy gets skates and asked to go skating. Unfortunately the little boy dies and the dad is only left with his computer that he soon finds out offers no life and can really give him nothing in life. This is so interesting because technology is so much more present and life consuming now then it was in that decade. This is still such a good example for putting other gods before God because I truly believe that people idolize technology and that it could even be considered spiritual warfare in America and other developed first world countries.
The last film in the series represents the commandment "Thou shall not covet a neighbors good". This was played out by a man that movie away from his hometown to pursue a life in the business world, leaving behind his parents and his home for money and for a better quality of life. Eventually, his parents pass away without him going home to say goodbye and it shows his journey in attempt to get back to his parents to perform rituals for them. During his journey, there were several obstacles he had to face. He gets cheated by a lady when she talked him in to buying her car, gets robbed, and has to hitch hike half of his way. He goes to great lengths to perform rituals for his parents, and learns the value of not being greedy in relationships.
