Hanscom - Donnie Darko

In the film Donnie Darko, we get to understand the mind of a troubled teenager who travels through time to save his family and friends. In the beginning of the film, Donnie miraculously escapes death when an airplane engine mysteriously comes crashing through his room because he decided to follow the bunny's voice that night out into the golf course. The bunny tells Donnie that the world was going to end in 28 days, and gives Donnie commands that he has to follow over the course of the next 28 days. No one understands Donnie's "hallucinations" with the bunny, however, he manages to reach out to others to help him discover the meaning behind his doomsday visions. He finds a book on time travel that a local woman named "Grandma Death" wrote that helps him discover what's happening with him. Donnie goes through experiences that he wishes he could change. He wishes he could have saved his girlfriend, protected his mom and sister on the plane, and refrained from killing Frank the bunny.

It's amazing to see how Donnie decides to sacrifice himself by going back in time and dying in his bedroom when the engine came crashing in. Because of his sacrifice, he managed to save his girlfriend, mother, sister and Frank from dying. In the scene right before he died, I thought it was weird that he was laughing. After our discussion in class, I realized he was laughing because the words Grandma Death said to him, "In the end, everyone dies alone", weren't true. He wasn't alone in his death because he had meaningful connections with his family, girlfriend and friends. Even though his girlfriend had no memory of him after his death, his family was distraught with grief because they loved him so much.
