Goodness without God?-SMM
It is said that all good things come from God as James 1:17 says "every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights." My question is then can there be any goodness without God? When I say this I am mostly talking about goodness from people... can a person be good without God? I have met people who are non-believers or not followers of Christ and they are happy, kind, and caring towards others. They treat others well but are they not good? Are their actions not good? Because without God they cannot do good. This is assuming that it is believed God only dwells in those who let him. In that case, if someone does not have God and they do something objectively good then what is their motivation? What do they base their beliefs on for what is good? Who is determine what is good? Because if it were based on human reasoning and opinion, each person would say something different. And would their motivation be selfish and to make them feel good about themselves? If they are doing something to feel good about themselves then the "selfish" motive of doing something good would then be what makes the action "bad" or not good. Is that the correct logic for rationalizing why someone cannot do something good without God? It somewhat makes sense because our human nature leads us towards survival behaviors and being good to others is not always the path that leads us that way.
