Erasing the Past - thoughts on The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
Alexander Pope's poem, “How happy is the blameless vestal's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot. Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned.” This poem is the theme throughout the film in The Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. I really resonated with the idea of erasing memories in order to forget heartbreaks or people in the past who have really hurt you. I think that this is something many people can resonate with especially with erasing bad memories. But as shown in the film erasing those things don't neglect the consequences that come with it. I think that this movie helped me realize that those hard things and the people I have encountered in my life has been important in shaping me into the person I am today. I can see why it would be very freeing to forget about certain thing in the past rather than being plagued by those memories daily but there are consequences that could be worse.
