Edward Bloom and Forrest Gump
When we read and learned about the different types of love (agape,
phileo, storge, and eros), I could apply the types of love to different
characters in certain times of movies, but very rarely did I see that a
character experienced all four types of love. The only main characters in a
movie that I can think of that feel all four different types of love are Edward
Bloom from Big Fish, and Forrest Gump.
Throughout Forrest’s well-known journey, he does feel the four types of love
that we went over. “Agape,” the love like affection or love for something, was
felt in Forrest’s multiple athletic feats. He loved running, he loved
ping-pong, and he loved Doctor Pepper. “Phileo,” the love you feel for a
friend, was felt for many people. Bubba and Lieutenant Dan were two of Forrest’s
best friends along his way. As well as for Jenny in the beginning. Next, “eros,”
the erotic for of love he obviously felt for Jenny. Finally, “storge,”
affection towards someone like a parent to their children, obviously is Forrest
Gump’s love for his son Forrest. The only other character I can think of that
also experienced the four types of the love that we learned was one that we
have seen, Edward Bloom, from Big Fish.
Throughout his odyssey and life, he also felt the four types. “Agape,” for doing
new things and seeing new places, “Eros” for his wife, “Phileo” for all the
people he me through his journey, and “Storge” for his son. Furthermore, when
you look at both characters, Forrest Gump and Edward Bloom are very similar in thier movies.
They both go on a very long journey with multiple adventures in the middle, they
both chase a woman that at first doesn’t love them back, both men fought in a
war, both men were stellar athletes in the sports they participated in, and now,
they both experience four types of love along their journey. Striking similarities between the two adventurous protagonists.
