A Theory of Agape by Stephen G. Post
"Divine love in the context of neighbor love is not devoid of self concern. But is evident especially in Christianity that a deity can experience grief" (54). This quote from Stephen G. Post's book on A Theory of Agape was very poignant in my search for understanding what it means to be selfless in agape love. I think that this statement holds a lot of truth in that the neglecting of the self is not a pure selfless act but is apart of the relationship with love. Because a relationship must consists with you and the other and without you there can be no full relationship. “If the divine had no interest in reciprocation, forgiveness would be both unnecessary and pointless” (55). The response in reciprocating to love is apart of it which is something that I had not really thought about previously. I think that the idea of desiring a response in the love is apart of the response towards forgiveness. Because this involves a response towards repentance.
