Film Technique
Bunny:
I really enjoyed the short film. I liked how the meaning at the end is some what up for interpretation with the oven. The music plays a huge part in the film, as it sets the tone and mood for multiple scenes. I also really like how it starts with the light, moth, and then you just see the bunny's hands setting up for his bake. The oven symbolizing the changing of states and her entrance into heaven was very clever, and the light in the over signifies it.
Harold and Maude:
I've never analyzed a scene from a movie as closely as we analyzed the scene when Harold smirks at the camera. As a viewer, the things we discussed in class are all the things you feel but don't articulate and work out in your head to justify the emotions brought by the film. The connectedness you fell with Harold during that scene brings you on his level and makes it even funnier. The very wide and far out frames contrasting with the very up close frames was interesting. Especially when he was talking to his grandma about the flowers all being identical, she disagrees and it goes from a very wide shot of the flowers to an up close of one individual flower.
Paris, Texas:
This was my favorite film that we viewed. The theme of transportation and movement was really interesting. I'm not sure if I would have noticed it if we didn't discuss it. The opening scene when Travis is in the suit is also interesting because his outfit doesn't fit the situation or the rest of his appearance at all. The scene when Travis eats ice cream with his son under the freeway bridges is telling because of the theme of transportation but also because in such a turbulent place, the two are having such a peaceful and intimate time. One of the coolest scenes is when Travis crosses the bridge with the angry ranter. Again the theme of transportation is obvious but also Travis's struggle and sympathy for this man is seen. The final scenes with Travis and his wife have a lot of interesting visuals utilizing the one way mirror. She appears in his shadow multiple times and there are multiple instances where one is facing the mirror and the other isn't.
Pink Floyd:
This was the weirdest one we viewed for me. I thought it was interesting that the film utilized both real people and animated scenes. There were may symbolic images in the animated scenes. They don't hold back at all with the animations either, there are a lot of provocative and very graphic things depicted. The symbol of the wall is used throughout, symbolizing how society put us in boxes and tries to mold us to fit the system. The final scene with the judge is very intense and sums up the whole film.
